How long will my dental implants take to heal?

Typically the dental implant process happens in multiple stages, meaning that more than one healing stage may be required. A number of other factors affect healing times including: how many teeth are being replaced and the patient’s overall health.

Below is a little about what will happen in between the procedure and recovery during each stage. You will be finished with your dental implant treatment once you have completed these stages.

For cases where bone grafting is required before the implant can be placed, a waiting period of approximately four to six months will be necessary before the implant portion of your treatment process can be started. Bone grafting is necessary in cases where the patient is lacking healthy bone in the area the implant is going.

When an extraction is required before the implant procedure there might be a healing period necessary. That said, thanks to new advances in dentistry, dentists can often place the implants at the same time as they perform the extractions. When that is possible there is no double healing time required. Depending on the patient’s health this stage can take around a week to heal.

Once the bone has integrated with the implant, after four to six months have passed, the second part of the dental implant procedure can take place.

Now your dentist can attach an abutment to your dental implant, to which either an artificial tooth (a dental cap) or denture will be attached.
